Works by Martin Puryear inspired this piece. I really admired his chosen media of wire and wood, as well as his curves and clean lines. As I was working I ran at least five different variations for the wires in my head but overall I wanted to relate the curves to waves or bicycle wheels. To create this, I began by taking a plank of wood and measuring where the wires would go. I then drilled the holes for the 16 gauge wire to fit snuggly in. Next, I cut 22 wires the exact same length and placed the in the holes. After assembling the wires I adjusted their placement and move them outward to create a greater sense of volume. My goal for this piece was to make an simplistic abstract form that would create a volume through the use of thin wires.
Depending on the person, what one would consider beauty could be entirely different. Also, given time the idea of something that was a one time considered beautiful may change, and vice versa. The reading used DuChamp’s “Fountain” as an example; when it was first “created” people may have thought of how beautiful it was, but over time it was just a urinal on it’s side. The point was also brought up that a work could be introduced in two entirely different way, having an effect on how the viewer perceives the work. This may apply to my relate to my project, depending on how other view it when it is finished.
For this project I will be “collaborating” with Martin Puryear. I will be using wood and wire in curves and clean lines as he does. Do do this i will drill holes in a board, 20 in the center and 10 on each side.starting from the center i will curve the wires down each side the length of the board.
My tower will be an abstract geometric form with large detail and most likely larger than the required thirty inches. Also, the top and bottom will be the same size, as will the form inside.
